A wind blew through the building and in an instant every sinner and backslider came to God, every sick person was healed, and everyone was filled with the Spirit.

A light bulb flash went off in the church. Everyone saw it. Suddenly several people were down at the altar. No one knew how they got there. It was evident that they were trans-located.

A cloud rolled into the meeting place. As soon as it did everyone fell on their faces and began to pray.

A lady praised the Lord and danced right off the platform into mid-air and stayed there for a few seconds and continued dancing.

History records that within 50 miles of Maria-Woodworth Etter’s meetings people fell under the power and became stiff as boards. They would then have to be carried to the meeting to be touched and loosed.

In one meeting in 1936 at Shepherds hill outside Louisville, Ky hundreds of people were genuinely slain in the spirit laying all over the area outside. The breadman drove up and saw hundreds weeping, others speaking in tongues, others still and prostrate, while others were rolling crying out to God. The breadman turned around and drove down as fast as he could.

Just one glance or look from historic revival giants like Smith Wigglesworth and Charles Finney would convict sinners of their sin.

Not only did men of old manifest Christ through their eyes, but they also kept their tongues under the power of God as they spoke forth the revelation of the Spirit through divinely inspired utterances.

Other times they were stuck dumb by the Spirit and couldn’t speak at all.

George Whitfield preached in the open air in Boston where thousands would gather. Youth would climb trees to better see and hear the preacher. He would tell them to come down so they would not fall and get injured when the power of God would start moving. Without Whitfield or anyone laying hands on people they fell under the power of God all over the grounds.

There have been historic accounts of people falling into a trance with their physical senses suspended as they stood frozen like a statue for hours or even days. Multitudes would come from miles around to see it. It was a sign and a wonder of God’s power in manifestation.

In the Bible men like Peter and Paul experienced trances.

Saul, one of the greatest persecutors of the Church saw a glorious blinding light, was knocked off his high horse, blinded for 3 days, and became one of the greatest apostles to ever live, writing a large portion of the New Testament.

Throughout Church history and past revivals not only did men often shake under the power of God, but in the beginnings of the Church age buildings shook.

Earthquakes opened prison doors and loosed prisoners from their chains.

A couple was struck dead in a church meeting for lying to the Holy Ghost.

Men were struck blind for trying to hinder the gospel.

The dead were raised.

Angels appeared.

Miracles of healing and deliverance were common.

Here is a recent testimony from a post I commented on in Facebook that speaks of not only the powerful moves of the Spirit in days of old but of the Word they preached.

“These men and women of old knew nothing of the extensiveness of error in the cotton candy gospel of today. They nipped it in the bud. They stated without apology that without holiness we won’t see the Lord. They knew scripture far better than today’s Bible professors. Sister Pauline Parham, the daughter in law of Charles Parham, told me in Dallas in the early 80s that the old preachers knew the Word far better than the new generation, and powerful moves of the Spirit not seen today were common.”

Why aren’t we seeing this kind of power and unusual signs and wonders in and through the Church today? For one, we are not preaching the real gospel and the vital themes of the New Testament. Isn’t it interesting that the top three television preachers in America no longer mention the cross, the blood, and hell in their preaching? That is the first time this has happened in American history.

I believe the second reason we are not seeing the power of God in manifestation in a great measure is due to a lack of consecration and Holy Spirit filled prayer.

At this critical point and juncture in our nation the power of God is the only thing that will change it and alter its course.

  1. Don’t we need to cry out to God, and for a mighty move of the Spirit even more after yesterday’s Supreme Court ruling! Also, considering the increased violence of Isis, and threat to us around July 4th!

  2. That’s why we need to continue to cry out to God for an awakening, and walk holy as He is holy! Oh for those days …and even more beyond that. This generation must see the power of God, some have never been in a move of God. Lord, revive us again!!!!!

  3. Signs and Wonders was the most amazing book i’ve ever read. Oh to see the manifestation of God move through the people again. May God grant us a time of revival and righteousness again before Jesus returns.
