I was so moved by this word from Mario Murillo that I wanted to post it to those of you who may not follow him or even know of him. I am in such accord with this word and have written with the same spirit of it for many years.

Here it is:

Some say it is impossible for America to be destroyed because God is on the throne. America’s demise would never be a reflection on God’s mercy, grace or power, it would be only because we destroyed ourselves.

So is it too late for America? You do not need a stock answer to this question. This is an explosive question that deserves a considered opinion. In the next few minutes I wish to respond to this question and I ask that you reserve judgment until you read what I have to say in its entirety.

Let me begin by asking you a question. What if a rational Christian told you that they believed it was too late for America? How would you react? Would you react by being angry or dismissive? If so, then you my friend are part of the problem. Those who say that it is too late for America have a strong case and we are wise, if we want to have any hope at all, to soberly listen.

This is when they say that a nation is finished:

1. When a nation owes a debt that it cannot pay: If, as the Bible says, the borrower is servant to the lender, then we already belong to China.

2. When the nation’s leader shakes his fist at God: Some Christians hold to the fantasy that we have a president. We do not. We have an activist in the White House. Obama is shaking his fist at God. He feels no accountability to our constitution. He stands with Islam and not Christianity or Judaism. He is reshaping America. He is dismantling our greatness because he despises the America that was once one nation under God.

Many Christians dismiss any indictment of Obama as politics, racism or unchristian because the reality that we have a renegade president is frightening. However, facts are facts. They are neither racist nor political.

3. When God sends prophets and their warnings are ignored or rejected: 2 Chronicles 36:15, “And the LORD God of their fathers sent warnings to them by His messengers, rising up early and sending them, because He had compassion on His people and on His dwelling place. 16 But they mocked the messengers of God, despised His words, and scoffed at His prophets, until the wrath of the LORD arose against His people, till there was no remedy.”

We are beyond the place where pastors merely leave truth out. Today they mock truth and brand voices from God as radicals. We see religious empires built entirely out of human wisdom and defended like a crime family.

The church is feverish with 7 deadly sins: Denial, Arrogance, Entitlement, Deception, Sensuality, Rebellion and Materialism. For this and many other reasons, America hangs precariously in the balance.

So let me answer the question directly. No, it is not too late for America, but we must shed many things that we are doing right now, and we must shed them with intense zeal as if they were radioactive waste…or, very, very soon it will be too late.

Mario then lists 7 deadly sins we must shed:

Denial: The sense that all is well and though we do not know how but it will all turn out okay. This was the prevailing mood among Lutherans in Germany as Hitler was seizing power. This allows Christians to abide the death of marriage, the rise of Islam and the decline of Christianity by looking the other way. They hate it when any preacher criticizes the government because they just want everything to be nice.

Arrogance: They boast of spiritual authority they do not possess. They constantly talk about their “words from the Lord.” They revel in titles and always seek to be recognized.

Entitlement: They feel that gifts and blessings belong to them without training, effort or having to prove their character. Tribulation and suffering are things that happen to other people. They despise messages about sacrifice.

Deception: Never have I seen people so gullible as our present crop of Christians. And they are gullible at a time when being gullible is most costly. All a speaker has to do today is to relate some mystical experience they had and they will get a following. These are the itching ears of 2 Timothy 3. They are Biblically illiterate so they have no way to judge their experiences with the Word of God.

Sensuality: Pastoral drunkenness and immorality are now widespread. If that is the state of the shepherd then what is the condition of the sheep? Perverting grace is a deadly sin! Jude 1:4 For certain men have crept in stealthily [gaining entrance secretly by a side door]. Their doom was predicted long ago, ungodly (impious, profane) persons who pervert the grace (the spiritual blessing and favor) of our God into lawlessness and wantonness and immorality, and disown and deny our sole Master and Lord, Jesus Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed One). AMP

Rebellion: One of the linchpins of the seeker model is rebellion. There, I said it. Why else would you make church so convenient and superficial? You do it to cater to people with commitment issues. You build a church for people who do not want to be told what to do.

Materialism: Let me be clear. God wants to bless us with good things. Where we are derailed is when we forget why we are blessed. He blesses us with more than enough so that we can give. Many Americans want to a certain lifestyle and they do not want their pastor to mess with that. They will even elevate their pastor to superstar status if he keeps the rightful demands of God off of their back.

Finally: The good news is that a righteous core has the power to move God away from judgment but we are nearly out of time. You have the power to gather others who are grieved over our nation and form a prayer cell. I challenge you today to read the following prayer of Daniel and by inserting the word America in key places in this prayer you have the perfect model:

Daniel 9:16 “O Lord, according to all Your righteousness, I pray, let Your anger and Your fury be turned away from Your city Jerusalem, Your holy mountain; because for our sins, and for the iniquities of our fathers, Jerusalem and Your people are a reproach to all those around us. 17 Now therefore, our God, hear the prayer of Your servant, and his supplications, and for the Lord’s sake cause Your face to shine on Your sanctuary, which is desolate. 18 O my God, incline Your ear and hear; open Your eyes and see our desolations, and the city which is called by Your name; for we do not present our supplications before You because of our righteous deeds, but because of Your great mercies. 19 O Lord, hear! O Lord, forgive! O Lord, listen and act! Do not delay for Your own sake, my God, for Your city and Your people are called by Your name.”

  1. I am in 100% agreement with this word…..thank you for posting! I never thought of the seeker friendly movement in such a way…I knew something is wrong with it….but pointing to it as rebellion makes so much sense. I recently made the decision to stop attending a seeker friendly church….I struggled with it for many months…after reading the word….and reading from Finney…watchman nee..john g lake…smith wigglesworth…and more recently Steve hill…ect…and so many fine leaders….something started to burn and awake inside me….praise God for vessels like you and brother murilo who refuse to let the church be asleep….God bless you.

  3. This is an inciteful description. It almost seems surreal, how much the Church has changed for the worse in recent years. To cry out to God in unity, in a prayer cell–I long for that!
